Cozy Up Your Home for Thanksgiving

Interior Design Tips with a Pacific Northwest Flair

Fall is all about cozying up and getting ready to spend more time indoors as the weather cools. To combat Fall and Winter blues and enjoy the transition of the seasons, it's time to transform our homes into cozy retreats. For this blog post, we are joined by Holley Hoffman, founder of Southwest Washington-based Hoffman Interior Design Group, to share some interior design tips that will infuse your home with a warm and inviting ambiance, perfect for the Thanksgiving season. So, grab your favorite throw blanket, and let's dive into creating a home that will have your guests swooning.

Embrace the Colors & Textures of Fall

What color palettes, textures,  accents, etc help achieve that classic Fall look inside?

“The leaves have changed and so has the time. Here at HIDG, we are all about shifting to cozy yet elevated. Warmer colors and soft textures create a feeling of comfort.

This season, I’m especially loving touches of burgundy in foliage as well as brass and wood components in accessories and furniture.

An easy way to transition your living room is by switching out a few pillows on your sofa and adding a textured throw blanket. Moody browns, rich greens, and deep blue are some of my favorite colors this season. Add a basket to your living room to drape extra blankets this time of year. It looks intentional and elevated.”

Are there any design techniques you use that are specific to the Pacific Northwest? What touches can someone give their home that embraces our local environment?

“We tend to see more natural elements incorporated like wood and stone. Large windows and lighting are also crucial components in our spaces to combat the overcast skies we experience.

Find color inspiration on your favorite hike or when walking your dog. As I gaze out my window, I see so many variations of green, yellow, red and brown in the leaves and trees. Pick your favorite of those colors and embrace it in different shades of textiles. I said it before but focusing on pillows and blankets makes a big impact. I personally love more muted colors and feel they create a more welcoming and effortless space. Many of our designs are inspired by the outdoors and where we live – more common than not.”

Setting The Table For An Amazing Thanksgiving

What are your tried-and-true techniques for Thanksgiving table decor?
“I love setting a table! When planning my table decor, I start with an inspiration or a color. Maybe a flower bouquet that caught my eye or mini pumpkins leftover from Halloween.

Line the center of the table with something that brings you joy. Add height and then foliage.

For example, let’s go with mini pumpkins and short votive candles. We will line those down the center of the dining table. The height will come from tall, tapered candles and some foliage in the center. Not too tall so your guests can still see each other. Instead of one centerpiece, do two smaller ones if that feels better. Add a tablecloth if you’d like or show off the natural elements of your table. Create something that feels effortless and elegant. Your guests will feel honored that you took the time to create something special. Finish with glassware and give yourself a toast – you did it!”

What will your Thanksgiving table look like this year?
On my Thanksgiving table, I love tapered candles and chargers. I have simple white dishes, so a rattan charger brings in a textured element or a beautiful gold charger really elevates the feel. Napkins and napkin rings are one of my favorite components. For napkins, I’m loving plaid this year! Layering in these items will really complete the overall look. One year, I used pinecones to hold place cards because I felt like I needed a little more fluff and it was the highlight of the table.

Achieving The Look

Where do you shop to secure new decor and furniture pieces?

I love to incorporate vintage pieces and Rusty Glamour in Battleground is one of my favorites as well as Urbanite in Portland. I stop in City Home frequently and appreciate their customer service and Hallstrom Home in Ridgefield is also great.

For new pieces, I typically order directly from the vendor. It’s important to get what you truly want when you are investing in a piece of furniture. I have many resources and relationships and would be happy to help!
